Recently, there has been a lot of debate regarding transgender children. Unfortunately, this topic has become a battleground for various reasons. One important factor is that trans kids are vulnerable and therefore easy targets. Additionally, many adults who lack knowledge on the subject still feel compelled to publicly express their opinions. Ne-Yo, a well-known musician, is one of those individuals who recently joined the conversation about trans youth for seemingly no reason. During an appearance on VladTV, he made an interesting comment, stating, “I come from an era where there were only two genders: a man and a woman. That’s just how things were.” He even added a sarcastic remark, saying, “You can identify as a goldfish if you want, but don’t expect me to play along.” He acknowledged that we live in a strange time and shed light on the role of parents, highlighting that they seem to have forgotten their responsibilities. Ne-Yo questioned the idea of letting young children make life-changing decisions for themselves. He expressed his confusion on when it became acceptable to allow a 5-year-old, 6-year-old, or 12-year-old to decide who they are. Ne-Yo, who has seven children of his own, clarified his stance by saying he does not condemn anyone’s choices, as it is their life and their children. However, he faced backlash for his comments and later reconsidered his words, apologizing to those who may have been hurt. He acknowledged that his remarks could be perceived as insensitive and offensive and pledged to educate himself further on the topic of gender identity. Ne-Yo concluded his apology by expressing his support for everyone’s freedom to express themselves and pursue happiness.
